Seasonal planning for your business.

Well those darker evenings are on their way and I can already feel myself missing the bright mornings. The children are back off to school and I can finally settle back into my normal routine.

It may seem early to most but if you are starting out with your cake business now is the time to think of the winter occasions which are on their way.

Halloween is a great occasion for cakes. From the zombie finger cupcakes to the huge haunted house sculpted cakes. Everyone loves to have fun on this spooky day of the year. Start thinking about what promotions you can do. Remember customers will be planning parties and fun for the children.

Look at some topical movies to give you some inspiration. Beetlejuice and the Twilight movies are a great place to start. A classic and a modern day vampire and werewolf love story, sure to make anyone get their fangs out!

Next we have the biggest event of the year. Christmas is a great time to promote your cake business. In September the children go back to school and the parent teacher’s association start thinking about their Christmas fairs. Get in first by calling the head of the PTA, if you are unsure who this is the school receptionist is a good place to start. Introduce yourself and let them know you are interested in holding a stall at their future events. Remember some schools will also hold bonfire parties and you may be considered for this event too.

Remember it’s a good idea to offer the person organising the event a prize for any raffle they are doing. If you support the school they will remember it and are more likely to invite you back again.

Your customers will soon start thinking about Christmas gifts so start thinking ahead of them how you can cater for their family, friends or work colleagues. You may even want to consider teachers gifts as they are becoming very popular at Christmas. Some good ideas are mini Christmas cakes, cupcakes and chocolate pizzas. Marshmallow pops are ideal stocking fillers too.

I will do many more blogs on what you can sell when doing a stall at these events. Remember the cake industry is growing by the day and you will need to think outside the box in order to get ahead. You aren’t the only person looking to pay the bills this autumn and many others will have been thinking of Christmas for a long time.
