  1. I’ve been a fan of My Little Pony for as long as I can remember. I once had a large plush pony which I decided to use when I attempted my first ever tribal hair wrap using cotton. Needless to say the poor pony needed a haircut after my efforts.

    This week however I was given the opportunity to make a My Little Pony themed cake for a lovely little girls 7th birthday.

    Rather than make a plain round cake I wanted to do something unusual and 3D in style. It seemed silly to go to all the effort of making 3D ponies only to stick them on a plain cake. So I set about sketching out my ideas and finally I settled on a cloud and rainbow theme.

    My first challenge was making the cake into the shape of a cloud. I imagined carving the cake into crumbs trying to get a perfect rounded shape. Eventually I had the idea of baking balls using my ball pan and mounting them together as a cloud and covering as one. This worked a treat, and makes the cloud shape look really effective.

    The hardest part about making this cake was the weather. It was hot and humid from the start to the finish and I spent last night in bed unable to sleep with worry that something would wilt or break overnight.

    Thankfully the Tylo powder did the trick and everything set perfectly and if I do say so myself, the cake looks really cute.

    It’s great when you can turn a tiny thought in your head into a real 3D cake. Next I start working on a promotional cake for the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon to celebrate the launch of their newest show.

  2. Today I had some great fun helping judge the Big Bake Off at Swindon College. From tray bakes and biscuits and show stopping cakes there was entries in every category.  Thankfully I hadn’t had any breakfast as we had to try over 30 cakes and bakes and it was a considerable job to judge the categories we had.

    From the overall presentation to the standard of skills and of course the taste we had to take everything into consideration. I really loved seeing how adventurous the entries were with things like Chocolate and beetroot tray bakes and shortbread baked by a four year old which were simply divine!

    It was a nail biting few hours in which I must have consumed a few thousand calories but it was all for an amazing cause and I was so honoured to be judging alongside Christine Wallace who was a quarter finalist on the Great British Bake Off in 2013 and Toby who was on the same series and who is a great giggle to work with.  I have already been asked by a few cake friends what they are like and I have to say they are such lovely people and I hope to work with them again soon.

    The event was attended by a huge crowd and the Swindon Advertiser and local radio station were present too. If you have any photos from the event please do send them over I’d love to see them and share them.

    Best in show was my favourite entry of the day made by Emma Pearse and her entry of a classic English garden cake was outstanding and deserved not only it’s first place in the category but the overall best in show. Congratulations to Emma you did so well.

    I have thoroughly enjoyed judging the competition and it’s the first of many I have lined up for this year. I think a cake amnesty will be had in this house for a few days though as I’m all caked out.

    This week I had a lovely little delivery of a Silverwood Square 6” cake tin from Cake decorating store. My usual pan of choice is the PME pans however I think I may be returning for the Silverwood ones in every size as they are so much better.

    In comparison the PME pans have rounded corners there is no chiselled edge and the corners don’t naturally form a point. Currently the fashion is to have very neat edges with a sharpness to them which isn’t easy to achieve with the PME tins. The Silverwood tin is incredibly sharp and to the point. The removable bottom is handy although not necessary as I usually turn my cakes out very easily.

    Here I have photographed the corner of the pan for you to see just how good the corners are. Even on a pan this small you get precise finish to the pan. Something I haven’t previously seen.


    I would recommend these tins to anyone looking for a set of square tins and the Cake decorating store are the best company in my eyes to purchase from. The tin was here within 36 hours and very well wrapped too. It’s great to deal with such a reliable company especially with how pushed we are with deadlines all the time.
